Every once in awhile me and Valiente loved to stop by the offices of el barrio’s newspaper, La Voz, to look at an old black and white photograph of La Llorona, the Weeping Woman.

No one knew who had taken the photograph or how old it was.

It looked real and some experts from Texas Tech, the local university, had examined the photograph. They couldn’t tell if it was real or a fake. To those of us living in el barrio we didn’t really care what they thought. As far as we were concerned it was La Llorona and that was the end of it.

As soon as we walked into the offices of La Voz, I immediately noticed that the photograph of La Llorona was missing from its picture frame hanging on a wall.

“Mr. Aguerro!” I yelled. “Mr. Aguerro!!”

Mr. Aguerro was the newspaper’s editor.

As soon as I called for him, Mr. Aguerro came running from a back office. “What is it?” he asked.

“The photograph of La Llorona is missing!”

He explained that a man calling himself Mr. Snyder had just stopped by to place an ad in the newspaper.

“I was getting some samples of our ads to show him,” he said. “Oh no, he must’ve stolen the photograph!”

Just as we ran outside a policeman was passing by in his patrol car.

“Thief!” Mr. Aguerro yelled as he pointed to a man walking down the street. “Thief!!”

The policeman drove down the street and stopped the man just he passed a mailbox.

They talked for a few minutes and then the policeman let the man go.

When he drove back to us I asked him why he had let the man go.”

“Because,” he answered, “he didn’t have the photograph on him. He couldn’t have stole it.”

Did you get his name?” I asked the policeman.

“Yes,” I wrote it down for my report.

“If you come back when the mailman picks up the mail,” I said pointing to the mailbox down the street, “I’m sure you’ll find an envelope large enough to hold the photograph with the man’s name on it.”

“Ah,” said Mr. Aguerro, as Valiente let out a bark, “I believe Perla is right!”

How did Mr. Aguerro know I was right? What did we know that the policeman didn’t?
